Risks Of Parabens And Alcohol In Skincare

First, let's start by identifying parabens and alcohol in skincare. For parabens, look for ingredients ending in “-paraben.” Methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben are three of the most common paraben ingredients.

Alcohols are easier to identify as they are listed under the name Alcohol Denat or Alcohol.

Why should we avoid them?

Some studies suggest parabens can potentially disrupt hormonal balance which can cause acne, oiliness, dryness, and stressed skin.

It has also been speculated that parabens could potentially lead to cancer formation. Parabens are also frequently associated with triggering skin irritations, leading to allergic reactions and contact dermatitis.

High alcohol content can disturb your skin barrier and strip off its natural oils, causing try patches, irritation, redness, and inflammation. It can be challenging to know the exact amount of alcohol present in your skincare products, as ingredient labels typically list components in descending order of concentration, not the exact amounts.

Parabens and the Planet

Parabens can enter wastewater after being washed off (from cleansers, shampoos, or creams) and are difficult to remove during wastewater treatment, causing water pollution and harming aquatic life.

Studies have also found parabens in marine organisms, including fish and mollusks.

Parabens remain controversial, with some experts arguing they are safe in regulated amounts, while others highlight potential long-term risks. Their negative reputation has encouraged consumers to choose cleaner formulations in the beauty industry.

Supporting brands that use eco-friendly and biodegradable preservatives can also minimize harm to ecosystems.
